Asia: FX performance subject to risk surrounding the US-China trade talk - Westpac

Frances Cheung, Research Analyst at Westpac, suggests that the Asian FX performance is subject to headline risk surrounding the US-China trade talk at the weekend, when headlines can be misread.

Key Quotes

“We do not expect anything substantial coming out from the US-China talk, but risk assets may still rally upon any news suggesting talks are in progress. This kind of reaction is unlikely to last unless there is a more concrete agreement which is not our core scenario.”

“The best that we hope for is a delay in the increase of tariff rate to 25%. Next week also brings November trade data from Korea and Taiwan which are seen as the bellwether of regional performance.”
